Health and Wellness Takes Center Stage in Colorado
Consider this: 75 percent of Americans are inactive and have poor diets. As a result, 33 percent of adults are obese and obesity-related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco-related deaths. Clearly, we have an intractable and complex problem.
Dr. Jim Hill, co-founder of the weight management organization America on the Move, has spent nearly three decades trying to solve this problem by battling Americans’ unhealthy lifestyles. This year his work received a huge boost when The Anschutz Foundation made a $15 million gift to help found the University of Colorado Denver Health andWellness Center at the Anschutz Medical Campus.
Dr. Hill, who will serve as interim director, speaks enthusiastically about the possibilities. “Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is one the simplest steps we can take to improve our health and quality of life. This center will help Coloradoans take this step through a comprehensive, research-based plan for weight loss and maintenance.”
The center will combine four primary disciplines: nutrition, physical fitness, weight management, and integrative medicine. This holistic approach differs from traditional models of care and takes on the lofty but achievable goal of helping patients to prevent disease altogether.
“I often talk about how small changes can make a big difference in our health. This gift from The Anschutz Foundation represents one big step to improve health, combat obesity, and prevent chronic diseases,” says Dr. Hill.
