A Dancer’s Passion Lives On
For Betty Jean Bruno, dancing was more than a hobby. Growing up as one of six children in Firestone, Colorado during the great depression, she learned to tap dance, an activity that brought great joy to her family and happiness to her childhood.
Betty had dreams of becoming a professional dancer, but the realities of life changed her course.
“She had to get out and make a living, get a job and start her life,” said daughter Cheryl Schuster.
But her love of dance was life-long. In 2006, after Betty lost her battle with lung cancer, her children looked for a special way to honor their mother’s memory and her dream of dancing. They established the Betty Jean Bruno Dance Scholarship so that Betty’s passion for dance could live on in a CU-Boulder student.
“The scholarship is intended to assist a CU student who has the talent for dance and the determination to make it a career,” said Cheryl. “My mother made the choice to devote her life to her family. I know she would smile to think she had a hand in helping another on a path she was unable to take — that of a professional dancer.”
