Endowed Beth-El Chair in Nursing and Health Sciences to Address Critical Nursing Shortage
Marilyn Miller never attended the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Neither did any of her relatives.
But as a tireless community advocate whose cardiologist husband, J.B., is one of the area’s medical leaders, Marilyn is devoted to this venerated nursing school and its long-time dean, Dr. Carole Schoffstall. “Every once in awhile we meet someone who is synonymous with a place, institution, agency or idea. In Carole Schoffstall we see that with Beth-El,” Marilyn says.
Indeed, Dr. Schoffstall has moved mountains during her 30-plus years of service to Beth-El.
She was the catalyst for the college’s landmark 1997 merger with UCCS, and has overseen a doubling of enrollment within the past decade. She introduced innovative programs, such as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) forensic-nursing track, and forged key community collaborations including the El Paso County Clinic, which delivers low-cost quality care throughout the region.
To honor Dr. Schoffstall’s retirement, Marilyn made a generous lead gift to Beth-El to establish the Dr. Carole Schoffstall Endowed Chair. This key endowment will enable Beth-El to better address America’s critical shortage of nurses, and increase access to the college’s world-class nursing education for students throughout Colorado.
“My hope is to help make more of the community aware of this gem,” Marilyn says. “This city is lucky to have Beth-El.”
