Gary Taipalus Memorial Fund #0323906
Scholarships for joint degree students in Master of Urban and Regional Planning and Master of Public Health who apply the principles of sustainable urban planning and design to ensure populations can thrive physically, mentally and socially.
The purpose of this scholarship is to grow the interdisciplinary practice of planning and public health. A growing body of research is demonstrating that the way we design and build our communities is linked to health outcomes. There is a need for professionals who understand the broad determinants of health and can apply the principles of sustainable urban planning and design to ensure conditions where populations can thrive physically, mentally and socially.
The scholarship will be administered by the Department of Planning and Design and awarded to a student who is pursuing a University of Colorado Denver joint degree of Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and Master of Public Health (MPH). The program teaches students how to prevent disease and make healthy behaviors the easy choice by improving places where people live, work and play.
This award was created in memory of Gary Taipalus, whose dedication to scholarship brought him to the University of Colorado Denver to earn dual Masters Degrees in Architecture and Urban Design after successfully practicing architecture, urban planning and design for more than 25 years. While at the University, he researched and taught the public health/planning connection, and was committed to making public health a cornerstone of sustainable urbanism.
CU Faculty and Staff may give via payroll deduction. More information here.
