An uncommon commitment to the common good
Established in 2017, the Benson Society bears the name of Bruce and Marcy Benson, whose personal and professional dedication to philanthropy and service to the University of Colorado as former president and first lady have left an indelible mark on our institution. The society celebrates philanthropic benefactors (individuals, families and family foundations) who share Bruce and Marcy’s vision for a better world–and whose investments in CU’s programs, people and facilities exceed $1 million in lifetime gifts or commitments.
Membership in the Benson Society represents the pinnacle of philanthropy at CU, a signal of donor vision and generosity that benefit our world with enduring impact. By early 2025, its ranks had grown to 499 households that collectively invested $1.95 billion in philanthropic gifts to CU. Today, the number of honorees continues to climb, along with the society's significance for CU and the world.

A celebration of remarkable generosity
Each spring, society members gather at the Benson Society Gala, an elegant black-tie affair at Denver’s Four Seasons Hotel. The event showcases students, alumni, faculty and health care professionals whose lives, careers and academic and research activities have benefited from the generosity of society members. Entertainers for the gala have included national recording artists Emmylou Harris and Judy Collins, in addition to student and alumni performers from CU’s four campuses.
Led by former 9 News anchor and CU Cancer Center patient Mark Koebrich, the 2025 gala featured live jazz and ballroom dance performances, an opera performance by CU Boulder alumnus and Grammy Award winner Wei Wu, remarks from CU President Todd Saliman, and an inspiring on-stage conversation about the innovative, philanthropy-powered research and care taking place at the Katy O. and Paul M. Rady Esophageal and Gastric Center of Excellence at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
